  9.   1.  Introduction

  12.   Having a free Unix-like operating system like Linux is Really Nice
  13.   (TM). All the corresponding source code is publicly available, wither
  14.   via FTP, on CD-ROMs or in specialized BBSes.
  15.  
  16.   "Free Software", however, does not necessarily mean that the software
  17.   is available for free -- it just implies what you are allowed to do
  18.   with it once you have it. This is the interpretation of the term "Free
  19.   Software" pushed by the Free Software Foundation
  20.   <gnu@prep.ai.mit.edu>, especially by Richard Stallman <rms@ai.mit.edu>
  21.   (the founder of the GNU project and the developer of GNU Emacs). My
  22.   opinion is in perfect sync with that. However when it comes to
  23.   widespread commercial use of the free operating system we are talking
  24.   about, this is virtually impossible without commercial applications
  25.   running on it.

  29.   2.  About this document

  31.   This is the Linux Commercial-HOWTO. It contains commercial application
  32.   software which is available for Linux. The Commercial-HOWTO will not
  33.   contain Linux distributions and related stuff -- that's what the
  34.   Distribution-HOWTO is for. Actually, this document should have been
  35.   called the "Linux Commercial Application HOWTO" to avoid confusion,
  36.   but that seemed somehow unhandy to me...

  135.   customers and the whole Linux community. Resellers will not be listed

  175.   This HOWTO is not actually a HOWTO in the sense of the Linux
  176.   Documentation Project
  177.   <http://sunsite.unc.edu/pub/Linux/docs/HOWTO/INDEX.html>. Instead, it
  178.   is an instrument to investigate the commercial Linux opportunity and
  179.   to list applications which were already ported and marketed in a
  180.   native Linux version. As a software vendor, you probably know that you
  181.   can alternatively offer Linux users a statically linked SCO version of
  182.   your application which would probably run under the iBCS2 emulator
  183.   (albeit with a small performance penalty and higher memory
  184.   requirements). Such applications will not be listed here (but see the
  185.   iBCS2 documentation <ftp://tsx-11.mit.edu/pub/linux/BETA/ibcs2/>).

  188.   I will not select nor deselect any particular product. Instead,
  189.   everyone who wants to have his/her product included will be serviced.
  190.   However, I reserve the right to shorten individual entries to keep
  191.   things in shape.

  194.   probably due to one of the following reasons:

  238.   meant to help potential commercial software developers to market their
  239.   products. There are several caveats to watch when doing this, e.g. the
  240.   GNU General Public License

  337.   6.2.  Some Aspects
  338.  
  339.   Porting to Linux simply means recompiling in many, many cases.
  340.   Sometimes some #include tweaking may be necessary. If you develop your
  341.   apps using GNU C/C++ which is very useful sometimes, there should be
  342.   virtually no further work to do.
  343.  
  344.  
  345.   One big advantage with Linux is that all the source code of the
  346.   operating system is freely available. Experienced programmers can
  347.   easily spot the locations where problems occur and contact the
  348.   "responsible" developer for assistance. I never encountered any of
  349.   those guys being impolite -- just make sure you read the respective
  350.   documentation first...
  351.

  353.   The persons responsible for the Linux port should know where to get
  354.   vital information in case of problems. The Linux Documentation Project
  355.   <http://sunsite.unc.edu/pub/Linux/docs/HOWTO/INDEX.html> offers plenty
  356.   information about all and everything and the kitchen sink. The Linux
  357.   INFO-SHEET <http://sunsite.unc.edu/pub/Linux/docs/HOWTO/INFO-SHEET> is
  358.   a good place to start with for beginners.

  361.   The key to success with your Linux port is Internet access,
  362.   particularly FTP access to the big Linux FTP servers as
  363.   sunsite.unc.edu <ftp://sunsite.unc.edu/pub/Linux> or tsx-11.mit.edu
  364.   <ftp://tsx-11.mit.edu/pub/linux> and their legion mirrors.

  367.   It appears that one big problem is after-sales support. If you do
  368.   market your software for Linux, you should consider to employ someone
  369.   who knows whom and where to ask in case of problems with the OS
  370.   itself. On the other hand, you may expect problems with Linux to be
  371.   solved much faster than problems with commercial Unix variants. For
  372.   example, the /bin/login bug allowing people to log onto Unix hosts as
  373.   root without entering a password (known publicly in September 1994)
  374.   was solved in a fortnight under Linux, whereas IBM shipped AIX with
  375.   the broken /bin/login for another couple of months (and didn't tell
  376.   customers although there was a fix available via FTP).

  379.   After-sales support for Linux, on the other hand, can be a good
  380.   opportunity for small companies and startups. If you want to sell a
  381.   Linux version of your product you might want to find such a company to
  382.   outsource the after-sales support (see respective section). They might
  383.   even help you with the porting.
  384.

  386.   Some companies selling big and expensive software packages offer
  387.   completely installed systems, i.e. the hardware, the OS and their
  388.   specific software. In the contract, you can restrict your warranty to
  389.   specific kernel / library versions so that problems are unlikely to
  390.   occur at a later time.

  393.   The GNU General Public License
  394.   <ftp://ftp.germany.eu.net/pub/packages/gnu/COPYING> (GPL) and the GNU
  395.   Library General Public License
  396.   <ftp://ftp.germany.eu.net/pub/packages/gnu/COPYING.LIB> (GLPL) contain
  397.   no restriction in terms of marketing products developed with GNU tools
  398.   as the GNU C/C++ compiler. Anyway, the legal strength of the GPL was
  399.   never checked at court -- I doubt it can be enforced outside the
  400.   U.S.A. If you violate the GPL, you may expect being sued by the FSF
  401.   and being bashed publicly by the Linux community -- the GPL has a
  402.   strong ethic value. In case of doubts, you might want to contact the
  403.   Free Software Foundation <mailto:gnu@prep.ai.mit.edu>. A very
  404.   comprehensive interpretation in German is printed in section 1.7 of
  405.   Kai Petzke's book "Unix fuer jedermann -- Einfuehrung in Linux",
  406.   Bernd-Michael Paschke Verlag, Berlin 1995, ISBN 3-929711-07-9.

  409.   Pricing: Well, there are three major philosophies around. Some
  410.   companies offer a full or limited version for a very low fee or even
  411.   for free. Others consider the Linux version as valuable as those for
  412.   other OS's and offer it at a reasonable discount. Third, the price is
  413.   equal to that of, say, the Solaris or the HP/UX version. Finding a
  414.   reasonable price for your product may be somewhat more difficult than
  415.   for other Unixes because there are many Linux users expecting to get
  416.   everything for free ;-). Others (seriously interested customers, i.e.
  417.   business people and decision makers) know that nothing is for free.
  418.   You'll have to decide for the target customer.
  419.

  422.   A word concerning fast version shifts. This is clearly a prejudice.
  423.   From the view of a software vendor, this is clearly not true. Linux is
  424.   no moving target. It is true that Linus Torvalds
  425.   <mailto:torvalds@cs.helsinki.fi> sometimes releases two or more kernel
  426.   patches per week (or even more) in the hackers' corner (odd minor
  427.   kernel release numbers). However, if you found a kernel doing what
  428.   it's designed to do (version 1.0.9 or 1.2.3 being good choices),
  429.   there's no reason to upgrade. Leave everything as it is and limit your
  430.   warranty to certain kernel releases. Selling complete systems helps
  431.   here, too, because you can ensure the respective kernel and its device
  432.   drivers work in perfect harmony with the computer, its peripherals and
  433.   your application.

  436.   You might consider offering a statically linked Linux version too (as
  437.   it is very popular for SCO due to some nasty bugs in several SCO
  438.   runtime libraries) but please tell your customer about the additional
  439.   memory requirement. However, it is important to mention that a
  440.   dynamically linked application automatically satisfies all the
  441.   requirements of any LGPL libraries that it uses, but a statically
  442.   linked application does not.  A statically linked application must be
  443.   available in some relinkable form to satisfy the LGPL.
  444.  
  445.  
  446.   If you intend to offer a shrink-wrapped systems (i.e. a complete
  447.   hardware/software installation) please avoid IDE harddisks. Those
  448.   disks are a perfect performance bottleneck for a real-world
  449.   multitasking OS.
  450.  
  451.  
  452.   Two killer applications are needed under Linux: a good text processing
  453.   system and a good spread sheet. With Xess, a useful spread sheet is
  454.   available, but a good text processor a la Word for Windows is still
  455.   missing. Many users use the statically linked SCO version of
  456.   Wordperfect V6 under the iBCS2 emulator (actually, Wordperfect Corp.
  457.   has been selling more copies for use under Linux than under SCO) but
  458.   at a bad memory penalty. A native Linux version is still missing. Why
  459.   do Wordperfect, Star Division and the others hesitate ... ?
  460.

  462.  
  463.   Copy protection is virtually impossible under Linux. Because the
  464.   kernel and all the associated tools are available as source code, any
  465.   experienced hacker can hook dongle or key card ioctl() calls. On a PC,
  466.   you don't have a machine/CPU id available. You don't want to build a
  467.   specialized kernel for a certain (and given) hardware configuration,
  468.   not disclosing the corresponding source code; such a kernel would be a
  469.   "derived work" according to the GPL, and doing so would clearly
  470.   violate the GPL.

  473.   Last not least, don't forget that university and college students who
  474.   are the majority of Linux users worldwide are the decision makers of
  475.   tomorrow. If you offer them a reasonably priced product for their
  476.   beloved operating system today (think of campus licenses), there's
  477.   little question which application they will choose tomorrow.

  480.   7.  Migrating to ELF format
  481.  
  482.   On March 28, 1995, H.J. Lu <mailto:hjl@nynexst.com>, the maintainer of
  483.   the binary distributions of GCC, LIBC and the associated binary
  484.   utilities (binutils), posted in comp.os.linux.announce:
  485.

  487.   Hi,

  489.   In the next few weeks, Linux will move to the ELF binary format. A
  490.   new set of the ELF-based development tools will be released for
  491.   testing during the week of March 27. All the new binaries generated
  492.   by the new development tools will be in ELF. We have compiled the
  493.   kernel, XFree86 3.1.1 and many packages in ELF. They are all working
  494.   fine. The next module utilities will also support ELF.
  495.  
  496.   In the meantime, a new and last a.out DLL shared C library 4.7.x will
  497.   also be provided for bug fixing. All the old a.out binaries should
  498.   continue running fine. But all the new features will only be in the
  499.   Linux C library 5.x.x which will be in ELF only.
  500.  
  501.   To help smoothly transfer to ELF, I hope the commercial software
  502.   vendors please get in touch with me. I will provide all the necessary
  503.   supports to migrate to ELF, which should be very easy. I'd like
  504.   to see the ELF versions of Motif, Netscape, Mac emulator, ...
  505.   to just name a few. I have some documentations and examples which
  506.   are useful for using ELF.

  517.   8.  Linux vs. other free Unix flavors
  518.  
  519.   Why port to Linux and not to one of the free BSD versions like 386BSD
  520.   and its derivatives FreeBSD and NetBSD (short: *BSD)? Well, that
  521.   depends on your application. If it was originally written for a
  522.   SystemV-based system as AIX, HP/UX or Solaris 2, porting to Linux
  523.   should be fairly easy. *BSD lacks certain SystemV features (such as
  524.   the termio interface), and you'll have to carefully check the amount
  525.   of work necessary. On the other hand, FreeBSD and NetBSD are
  526.   maintained by a closed developers' team (as opposed to the open and
  527.   sometimes chaotic and anarchic Linux developers' community), and e.g.
  528.   for FreeBSD there is only one so-called distribution available per FTP
  529.   <ftp://freebsd.cdrom.com/>. You might want to mail info@FreeBSD.org

  540.           5.  Where BSD and POSIX differ, 386BSD conforms by default to
  541.           BSD; Linux to POSIX.  Furthermore, while both run mostly GNU
  542.           utilities, Linux tends toward the SysV flavor (e.g. init)
  543.           where 386BSD sticks with the BSD style.  However, sources for
  544.           different flavors of utilities are available for both, and
  545.           both support compiler options which allow more BSD or more
  546.           POSIX semantics.

  558.           is still a better choice if you want to program in a Berkeley

  568.   specific product more easy. I'd really like to present a better index
  569.   here but the current linuxdoc-sgml version doesn't offer support for

  571.   have the time) to develop some tools to implement that ... sorry.
